Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette wants to empanel a grand jury to investigate the recent meningitis outbreak -- allegedly caused by a contaminated steroid -- that has been blamed for 258 cases of meningitis and 14 deaths in the state.

High court to look at Michigan ban on preferences in university admissions

The Supreme Court agreed Monday to confront another high-profile challenge to affirmative action in college admissions.

The justices will decide the constitutionality of a voter referendum in Michigan banning race- and sex-based discrimination or preferential treatment in public university admission decisions.

The high court is currently deciding a separate challenge to admissions policies at the University of Texas, which did not involve a voter referendum.

early release of thousands of prisoners in 
an effort to balance the state's budget 
("Bolder prison changes would save state 
millions," Feb. 19). We disagree for two 
important reasons: 1) It is bad public 
policy; 2) It has been tried and it has not 
worked.
