“Father” of Truth In Sentencing says Bill Schuette is Best for AG

Former Michigan state lawmaker Bill Van Regenmorter today announced his endorsement of former Appeals Court Judge Bill Schuette for Attorney General.

Van Regenmorter is known as the “Father” of Truth In Sentencing legislation.  He was also the author of the Crime Victim’s Rights Act, which became a national model.  He has been honored with the Ronald Wilson Reagan Public Policy Award from the United States Department of Justice for his commitment to victims’ rights.

“As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I’ve had many opportunities to work with Bill Schuette.  He is an outstanding legal expert, and has remarkable integrity, passion and commitment.  As Attorney General, the protection of the most vulnerable citizens will be a very significant part of his work.  Scam artists will be aggressively pursued.  I fully support Bill,” Van Regenmorter declared.

“Truth in sentencing has been described as the most important criminal justice act in the past 20 years, and is a very effective deterrent for repeat offenders,” Van Regenmorter said.  “The early release of violent prisoners leaves a trail of victims in their wake. Truth in Sentencing insures that the minimum sentence to prisoners must be completely served.  Police and prosecutors strongly support Truth in Sentencing because penalties mean something and the public is protected from its most violent predators.  ‘If you do the crime, you will do the time.’”

“Police and prosecutors work hard to apprehend criminals and put them behind bars.  They deserve a state government that will work alongside them to keep dangerous criminals behind bars,” Schuette said.  “Bill Van Regenmorter understands that our state and Michigan’s families are far safer because of Truth In Sentencing.  I am honored to have earned his support and endorsement.”

Van Regenmorter’s endorsement of Bill Schuette comes at a time when the Granholm administration is attempting to overturn Truth In Sentencing and release prisoners before serving their minimum sentence.  Several prisons have already been closed in Michigan, and thousands of prisoners are being released earlier than normal.
