GOP taps Schuette for AG race
Republican Bill Schuette is one step closer to officially being "on duty" as the state's next Attorney General.
Schuette, a Midland resident, received 100 more delegate votes than candidate Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop at the 2010 Republican Convention Saturday. He received 1,092 votes.
Schuette will be up against Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton in the November general election and said public safety is his top priority.
"We need to make sure the safety and security of Michigan families is the number one responsibility of state government," Schuette said minutes after the votes were announced.
"Recently the national guard was asked to be deployed to Flint by community citizens. People feared for the safety of their families. We cannot have those in charge of public safety in Flint (Leyton), in charge of public safety for Michigan," Schuette said.
As Attorney General he said he will work to stop the closing of prisons, stop the early release of criminals and stop the cutting of cops on the street.
"It will be a sharp contrast to the problems of public safety in Flint," he said.
The convention was held at the Breslin Center in East Lansing and was called to order at 10:46 a.m. Due to an extremely long line of delegates waiting to get inside the Breslin Center the convention started late. The doors were opened and delegates were allowed to come inside without credentials causing confusion.
Schuette previously served as a judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals, state senator, and as the Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
