Leyton to AG’s child support unit: Drop Dead
In spite of an epidemic of unpaid child support that is more than $9 billion in Michigan alone, Democratic candidate David Leyton says that the Child Support Unit in the Attorney General’s office should be scrapped.
According to an interview in the Kalamazoo Gazette, Leyton criticized current Attorney General Mike Cox and his powerful efforts to enforce child support laws.
The Attorney General’s Child Support Division’s investigators identify parents throughout the state who have the ability to pay support for their children, but refuse to do so. In other words, they target the worst of the worst.
In fact, the Attorney General’s Child Support Division has collected more than $90 million since its inception, directly benefiting almost 8,000 children. And according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the efforts by the AG’s office to increase and publicize child support payments has resulted in more than 60,000 children in Michigan receiving the support that they are entitled to by law.
In addition, the AG’s Child Support Division is a money-maker for the State of Michigan, returning $1.5 million back to the State.
“David Leyton is wrong when he wants to turn the clock back and scrap the AG’s Child Support Division,” Schuette said. “The Attorney General’s Office is there to protect the citizens of Michigan – and that starts by defending our children.”
